Companies struggle to popularize mobile money

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? Mobile money may seem like a hot concept, but consumers aren't warming to it.

At the world's largest cellphone trade show, here in Barcelona this week, the 70,000 attendees are encouraged to use their cellphones ?instead their keycards? to get past the turnstiles at the door. But very few people took the chance to do that. The process of setting up the phone to act as a keycard proved too much of a hassle.

It's a poor omen for an industry that's eager to have the cellphone replace both tickets and credit cards. Companies are building chips antennas into phones that let the gadgets interact with "tap to pay" terminals and other devices equipped with short-range sensors, like subway turnstiles. But getting the technology to do something useful and convincing people to adopt it is a slow process.

To make a payment in a store with your cellphone, "you need a lot of things to align," said Reed Peterson, who heads the Near-Field Communications initiative for the GSM Association, a global trade group for the wireless industry. The phone needs to be properly equipped with NFC hardware and software; the store needs to have the proper equipment and training. The phone company needs to support the transaction, and banks and payment processors need to be in on it.

Some of these things have fallen into place, Peterson said, but the network of commercial agreements that supports these payments needs to expand. And consumer demand remains elusive.

"I want to get to the point where the consumer goes into the store and says 'Show me only the phones that have NFC'," Peterson said.

Today, a buyer is quite likely to go into a store and ask for an iPhone, and that's an obstacle to NFC adoption. Apple Inc. is the lone holdout among major smartphone makers, and hasn't built NFC into any of its devices yet.

Visa, the global payments network, announced a coup at the show: it has struck a deal with Samsung Electronics to take charge of the "secure element" in the next flagship phone from the South Korean company. The Galaxy S IV is expected to be launched at an event in New York on Mar. 14, though the name has not been confirmed.

The "secure element" is sort of like a safe inside the phone. Whoever controls access to it decides which credit cards, transit passes or other verified "documents" the phone can store. A bank that wants to let customers use their Samsung smartphones as virtual credit cards will have to go through Visa.

Control of the secure element is a crucial battleground for NFC. The GSMA, which is dominated by cellphone carriers, advocates putting the secure element not in the phone itself, but in the subscriber identity module, or SIM card, which plugs into the phone to identify the user and supply a phone number to the network. SIM cards are issued and controlled by the carriers who would like to be the ones in control of the secure element.

While Visa, phone companies and Google (which has its own payment initiative) duel over the secure element, eBay Inc.'s PayPal is wondering what all the fuss is about. The online payment network thinks NFC is a lot more trouble than it's worth. The company isn't afraid to say so at the wireless industry tradeshow.

"If you want to change something, you have to solve problems that people have in everyday life," said David Marcus, the president of PayPal. "It's not like everyone is thinking 'Oh, I wish someone came up with something better'" than paper money and credit cards.

PayPal is putting a lot of effort into making cellphones central to the way we shop, but is focusing on the shopping experience itself, rather than payments. The company's ideal vision for buying a cup of coffee: You pull out your phone on the way to the store, fire up PayPal's app to order your double-skim latte and pay for it in advance. When you arrive at the counter, the barista has your picture and your coffee, and gives it to you right away. Then you're out the door.

Thirty years ago, Marcus said, store clerks knew the people in their neighborhood and greeted them by name.

"We think with this technology, we could recreate that personal connection," he said. "We feel this is going to leapfrog the efforts of NFC."

SpaceX Dragon Thrusters Are Back Online - Business Insider

All four of the Dragon capsule's thrusters are working normally again, Elon Musk announced on twitter:

Without the thrusters, the capsule was gradually losing altitude, being pulled into the Earth by its gravity. The thrusters are being engaged to move the capsule into a higher orbit and will move it to the International Space Station.

Because of the thruster malfunction, the planned docking with the ISS tomorrow won't happen. It may happen on Sunday, but the date and time are still uncertain.

Elon Musk just announced on twitter that the SpaceX team has gotten two of the Dragon Capsule's thrusters working, enough to get the capsule back under active control.

He also said in a press conference that the other two thrusters seem to be functional and should be fired up "within an hour," so, by 4:30 p.m. EST.

He then told reporters in a press conference that things are looking good.

"We've been deeply engaged in trying to figure out what went wrong with the Dragon thruster system and just moments ago we were able to bring the pods 1 and 4 online. We are now working to get 2 and 3 online as well. They are actually looking quite good.

I'm optimistic that we will be able to turn all four thruster pods on. And regain full control."

Thrusters 2 and 3 seem to be functional, but haven't been turned on yet.

The thrusters malfunctioned following launch this morning, and three were non operational. Since the Falcon 9 rocket deposited the SpaceX Dragon Capsule into space, it has been drifting aimlessly through space, instead of navigating its way to the space station as planned. It can stay up there for a few months, Musk said in the press conference.

"We noticed after separation we noticed that only one of the four thruster pods was ready to engage," Musk said. "We saw the oxidizer pressure in three of the four tanks was low. We spend that last several hours trying to fix the problem and we think we have. And if that's the case it will be a huge relief."

An issue with a propellant valve caused the malfunction, NASA says. Musk just said, "it looks like there was some blockage in the oxidizer pressurization and we've been able to free that blockage."

The thrusters are what move the capsule when it's docking with the ISS, so while the rocket successfully got the cargo to space, the Dragon can't maneuver into position to dock with the space station. The two they've gotten on line should be enough to make it to the space station, but three are needed for docking.

The capsule is SpaceX's second mission, funded by NASA, to deliver cargo to the International Space Station.

The first launch, in October, was a success.

(AP) ? A commercial vessel carrying a ton of supplies for the International Space Station ran into trouble shortly after liftoff Friday.

SpaceX's billionaire founder Elon Musk reported a problem with the thrusters on the unmanned spacecraft, named Dragon. Three of the four sets of thrusters did not kick in, he said via Twitter, and flight controllers for the company were trying to override the system.

Musk said from SpaceX Mission Control in Hawthorne, Calif., that he wants at least two thruster pods active before the twin solar panels that provide power are deployed.

NASA flight controllers in Houston offered help as they monitored space station operations.

The problem cropped up immediately following Dragon's separation from the rocket upper stage, nine minutes into the flight. The launch itself appeared to go flawlessly.

More than 1 ton of space station supplies is aboard the Dragon, including some much-needed equipment for air purifiers. The capsule is supposed to arrive at the space station Saturday morning after an unusually short chase.

This is the first major trouble to strike a Dragon in orbit. Two previous capsules, launched last year, had no problem getting to the space station.

SpaceX has a billion-dollar contract with NASA to restock the orbiting lab, and hopes the venture will lead to astronaut rides in a few years.

The private California company run by the billionaire who helped create PayPal, launched its unmanned Falcon rocket into clouds right on time. It was the third supply run by a Dragon capsule, an unparalleled accomplishment all under a year.

Launch controllers applauded and gave high-fives to one another, once the spacecraft safely reached orbit. The successful separation of the Dragon from the rocket was broadcast live on NASA TV; on-board cameras provided the unique views nine minutes into the flight.

Then the trouble struck.

The space station and its six-man crew were orbiting 250 miles above the Atlantic, just off the New England coast, when the Falcon soared. Astronauts are to use a hefty robot arm to draw the Dragon in and dock it to the station.

SpaceX tucked fresh fruit into the Dragon for the station residents; the apples and other treats are straight from the orchard of an employee's family. Also on board: 640 seeds of a flowering weed used for research, mouse stems cells, protein crystals, astronaut meals and clothing, trash bags, air-purifying devices, computer parts and other gear.

SpaceX ? formally Space Exploration Technologies Corp. ? has a $1.6 billion contract with NASA for space station shipments.

NASA's deputy administrator, Lori Garver, said using commercial providers is more efficient for the space agency. It's part of a long-term program, she noted, that has NASA spending less money on low-Earth orbit and investing more in deep-space missions. That's one reason why the space shuttles were retired in 2011 after the station was completed.

The goal is to have SpaceX and other private firms take over the job of ferrying astronauts to and from the space station in the next few years.

SpaceX ? so far the leader of the pack ? is aiming for a manned Dragon flight by 2015.

This is the second in a planned series of 12 SpaceX deliveries under the contract with NASA; the first was last October. A company-sponsored demo mission kicked everything off last May.

Competitor Orbital Sciences Corp. has yet to get off its Virginia launch pad. The company plans to launch a free-flying test of its Antares rocket and Cygnus supply ship in April, followed by a demo run to the space station in early summer. Then the so-called operational supply runs can begin.

Russia, Japan and Europe regularly make station deliveries as well, and Russia is the only option for astronaut rides. But only the Dragon is designed to bring back substantial amounts of research and used merchandise.

This Dragon is scheduled will spend more than three weeks at the space station before being cut loose by the crew on March 25. It will parachute into the Pacific with more than a ton of medical samples, plant and cell specimens, Japanese fish and old machinery, and used spacewalking gloves and other items.

SpaceX plans to launch its next Dragon to the station in late fall.

More than 2,000 guests jammed the Cape Canaveral launch site Friday morning to watch the Falcon take flight. It wasn't much of a show because of all the clouds.

Take a lesson from Apple: iTunes U tops 1B downloads

iTunes U has surpassed 1 billion downloads with more than 60 percent of the downloads from outside of the United States.

One popular course is professor Matthew Stoltzfus? general chemistry course from Ohio State University, according to the statement. The course had more than 100,000 iTunes U students the first year it was offered.

?I?ve been working with high school teachers who use my iTunes U material to prepare to teach their own classes, high school students all over the world who are leveraging the course to tutor their fellow classmates, even retirees who download my iTunes U course to stay intellectually active,? Mr. Stoltzfus?says in the statement.

iTunes U has made some of the most popular college courses more accessible, including ?Entrepreneurship Through the Lens of Venture Capital? from Stanford University. The course, founded by Stanford junior Ernestine Fu, focuses on the funding, management, and other aspects of building new enterprises, according to the description. It ranks at number 5 in the iTunes U list of recent "top courses."

?Her course, which I?m proud to be a part of, is the best course I?ve ever seen in my life,? professor Thomas Kosnik, one of the class advisors, says in a phone interview. ?I?m thrilled that our course is reaching so many students around the world.?

Ms. Fu -- who, at age 21, is considered to be the youngest venture capitalist in Silicon Valley -- proposed the class to Mr. Kosnik, Bill Coleman of Alsop Louie Partners, and David Hornik of August Capital and brought them on as advisors. Since then, she has recruited students to continue the course and helped undergraduates start work with venture capital firms.

At the Mansfield Independent School District in Texas, more than 10,000 high school students and teachers use their iPad for lessons, according to Apple.

?I see success unfolding before me on a daily basis,? says Chrissy Boydstun, a teacher from the Mansfield Independent School District, in the statement. ?Students are engaged and working hard as they use the incredible amount of information at their fingertips in a way that is meaningful and impactful. I love the way iTunes U provides a roadmap to take students beyond what a typical lesson or lecture could achieve.?

Why Do Our Memories Deceive Us in Love? It's All About Trust ...

Marcel Proust, who is often cited for his depiction of involuntary memory?the so-called ?madeleine episode? of Swann?s Way?probably had an even better understanding of voluntary memory and how selective it can be. ?Voluntary memory,? he writes, ?preserves nothing of the past itself.? He knew that life's vicissitudes exert immense pressure on the ways we remember things. And never is that truer than in our romantic lives.

But what is it that makes us remember only the good times in a relationship, while with other lovers, or in other times, we only seem able to recall the bad? An international team of psychologists led by Laura B. Luchies, of Redeemer University College, in Ontario, suggest in a new paper for the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology that they have isolated the cause. And it?s all about trust.

Citing previous scholarship, the authors define trust as ?the expectation that a partner can be relied upon to be responsive to one?s needs and to promote one?s best interests, both now and in the future.? That expectation is partly based on past experience. If your partner has cheated, you?re less likely to trust that person won?t do it again.

But trust is also based on some degree of blind faith. The combined weight of experience and faith, when favorable to the relationship, ?signals that it is safe to be dependent on a partner,? they write, adding:

Those with higher trust in their partner are confident that their partner has the self?s interests at heart and will behave in ways that promote the self?s well-being. Therefore, they tend to feel safe and relatively invulnerable and can afford to go yet further out on a limb, risking greater dependence on their partner because they are confident that their partner will act in ways that reinforce their feelings of safety and security.

In other words, trust?or lack thereof?is a matter of survival. Researchers guessed we would exaggerate about the past in ways that served these basic safety and security needs, disproportionately remembering the bad times when we need to protect ourselves, and remembering things ?in a way that prioritizes relationship dependence over self-protection??that?s to say, positively?when we do.

Testing hundreds of subjects in four separate longitudinal studies documenting both long-term and fledgling romances, the authors found that trust levels were a strong predictor of the truthfulness of our memories. We tell ourselves stories, the study suggests, to better preserve our relationships or withdraw from them. Or, as Joan Didion puts it, ?We tell ourselves stories in order to live.?

That holds true particularly with regard to memories of what the authors called ?transgressions??behavior in which a partner acts in voluntary ways we don?t like, ?violating relationship specific norms.? For some couples that could be sleeping with someone else. For others, it could be always forgetting to wring out the dish sponge.

Because transgressions can undermine our sense of stability in a relationship, we exaggerate those memories in particular, researchers found. What?s more, we recall our own transgressions more accurately because we don?t interpret them as such a threat. The one exception concerns forgiveness: when we are the transgressor, we remember ?whether or not we were forgiven (the withholding of forgiveness being another kind of threat) better than our own acts of forgiveness.

Past scholarship has suggested that other relationship factors?like overall satisfaction with a relationship?might also color our memories. In the 1980s, this was known as ?sentiment override theory,? which held that feeling happy in a relationship might cause us to remember the early days better and vice versa.?However, later research on relationship satisfaction, along with studies about commitment levels, attachment, and self-esteem, indicated that none of these things consistently colored our memories. Researchers in the current study controlled for those factors and found that trust was still a strong predictor.

Which brings us back to Proust, whose In Search of Lost Time may be the most convincing portrait of jealousy?trust's opposite?ever committed to paper. He understood that trust and jealousy had the potential to sabotage our memories when we?re falling in and out of love. Proof that love, as he writes ?is a striking example of how little reality means to us.?

This is the company that brought us Google Maps, driverless cars and Google Glass — see any of that in these phones?

Patrick Pichette said nothing shocking. Google's Chief Financial officer did not put his foot in his mouth. He didn't slam Motorola Mobility, the company Google acquired in 2012, as being lazy or incapable or inept or unable to make a quality smartphone that people would want to buy.

No, when Pichette spoke today at the Morgan Stanley Technology Conference (as relayed by The Verge), he simply reminded us of the truth. In fact, he didn't really say anything new. Motorola has current manufacturing obligations that must be met. (When companies don't do that, bad things happen.) And those current obligations, while serving some sort of purpose in the smartphone world (save for that pink RAZR MAXX HD, perhaps), simply aren't up to what folks in Mountain View would consider a "wow" product.

None of this should surprise anyone in the slightest.
