Syrian air force on offensive after failed truce

AMMAN (Reuters) - Syrian warplanes bombed rebel targets with renewed intensity on Tuesday after the end of a widely ignored four-day truce between President Bashar al-Assad's forces and insurgents.

State television said "terrorists" had assassinated an air force general, Abdullah Mahmoud al-Khalidi, in a Damascus suburb, the latest of several rebel attacks on senior officials.

In July, a bomb killed four of Assad's aides, including his brother-in-law Assef Shawkat and the defense minister.

Air strikes hit eastern suburbs of Damascus, outlying areas in the central city of Homs, and the northern rebel-held town of Maarat al-Numan on the Damascus-Aleppo highway, activists said.

Rebels have been attacking army bases in al-Hamdaniya and Wadi al-Deif, on the outskirts of Maarat al-Numan.

Some activists said 28 civilians had been killed in Maarat al-Numan and released video footage of men retrieving a toddler's body from a flattened building. The men cursed Assad as they dragged the dead girl, wearing a colorful overall, from the debris. The footage could not be independently verified.

The military has shelled and bombed Maarat al-Numan, 300 km (190 miles) north of Damascus, since rebels took it last month.

"The rebels have evacuated their positions inside Maarat al-Numaan since the air raids began. They are mostly on the frontline south of the town," activist Mohammed Kanaan said.

Maarat al-Numan and other Sunni towns in northwestern Idlib province are mostly hostile to Assad's ruling system, dominated by his minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam.

Two rebels were killed and 10 wounded in an air strike on al-Mubarkiyeh, 6 km (4 miles) south of Homs, where rebels have besieged a compound guarding a tank maintenance facility.

Opposition sources said the facility had been used to shell Sunni villages near the Lebanese border.

"WE'LL FIX IT"

The army also fired mortar bombs into the Damascus district of Hammouria, killing at least eight people, activists said.

One video showed a young girl in Hammouria with a large shrapnel wound in her forehead sitting dazed while a doctor said: "Don't worry dear, we'll fix it for you."

Syria's military, stretched thin by the struggle to keep control, has increasingly used air power against opposition areas, including those in the main cities of Damascus and Aleppo. Insurgents lack effective anti-aircraft weapons.

U.N.-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi has said he will pursue his peace efforts despite the failure of his appeal for a pause in fighting for the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday.

But it is unclear how he can find any compromise acceptable to Assad, who seems determined to keep power whatever the cost, and mostly Sunni Muslim rebels equally intent on toppling him.

Big powers and Middle Eastern countries are divided over how to end the 19-month-old conflict which has cost an estimated 32,000 dead, making it one of the bloodiest of Arab revolts that have ousted entrenched leaders in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.

The United Nations said it had sent a convoy of 18 trucks with food and other aid to Homs during the "ceasefire", but had been unable to unload supplies in the Old City due to fighting.

"We were trying to take advantage of positive signs we saw at the end of last week. The truce lasted more or less four hours so there was not much opportunity for us after all," said Jens Laerke, a U.N. spokesman in Geneva.

The prime minister of the Gulf state of Qatar told al-Jazeera television late on Monday that Syria's conflict was not a civil war but "a war of annihilation licensed firstly by the Syrian government and secondly by the international community".

Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani said some of those responsible were on the U.N. Security Council, alluding to Russia and China which have vetoed three Western-backed U.N. draft resolutions condemning Assad.

He said that the West was also not doing enough to stop the violence and that the United States would be in "paralysis" for two or three weeks during its presidential election.

Passion Pit's 'SNL' Debut: Watch Them ?Take A Walk? & Get ?Carried ...

passion pit snl

"Take A Walk" With Passion Pit

Michael Angelakos and his passion project Passion Pit made their Saturday Night Live debut on the October 12 episode, hosted by Christina Applegate. Before the show, we wondered if SNL?s notoriously bad acoustics would turn the group?s propulsive synth-pop into a muddled mess. Fortunately that wasn?t the case, partly because the band wisely opted for a pair of Gossamer?s bouncy, squiggly tracks instead of the LP?s more smothering songs.

The downside to choosing intricacy instead of thick walls of synths, though, is that Angelakos? voice can sound thin when performing those quieter songs live. He struggled a tad on ?Take A Walk,? which you can watch up top, but he found his footing for the second song ?Carried Away? which we?ve posted after the jump.

Internet Marketing Rules Blog: Niche Marketing In Your Internet ...

If you didn?t already know, it?s very important that you do your market niche research before you start doing a tiny bit of online marketing.

Researching your target market is important because you will know what they want, what they?re looking for, the solutions that they need, the problems that they have, and the goals they want to achieve. If you can delve deep and understand your market on this level, it will be very easy for you to get sales.

If you try to develop a product and start marketing it before you select your niche, you will find yourself losing alot of money, and wasting alot of time in the process. Before you start trying to sell to a particular audience, find a good niche first, then build a product and website around it so that you can go in and dominate.

The harder you look for obscure yet profitable niches, the higher your chances are at making the money that you are looking to make in your online business. Nothing is more important than finding a good niche to sell to. You can have the best product in the world, but if nobody sees it (or wants it)? it won?t do you any good.

So what are some of the ways that you can find out what the problems and goals that your target market has? Well, one option is with forums. There are many forums on the internet, and most of them get a great amount of traffic.

There are certain forums in some niches who are dominant in their presence, and they just trump all others. This is the kind of forum that you want to join. You want alot of activity, and people asking questions so that you can build up your credibility when it comes to promoting your website.

Finding a good forum in your niche is relatively easy to do. All you have to do is go to Google and type in ?[your niche] forum?. So if you have a basketball product, type in ?basketball forum?. If you have a bowling product, type in ?bowling forum?. If you have a gardening product, type in ?gardening forum?. This is very easy to do, and you can find the right forum for you within around 10 minutes.

Another way to find out what the whims and wants of your target market are is to go and join question and answer sites. Yahoo Answers is a great site for this purpose. There are many people who go on there asking questions and looking for solutions to the questions or problems that they have.

Soon after answering enough questions, you will be crowned as a ?top contributor?, and people will click on your profile to see if you have a website that will be of help for them. Everyday people use Yahoo Answers to get answers to their questions, and if you can be there to help them out, it will be a good thing to do for the growth of your online business.

So market research is very important. Don?t try to start marketing if you have no idea as to how you will start selling your products to people in a very effective way. The more you go out of your way to find the right niche to sell to, the more you will set yourself up for success.

Good luck with your internet marketing efforts.

(AP) ? Alex Rodriguez watched the New York Yankees' biggest game of the year on the bench.

After being pinch hit for in Games 3 and 4 of the AL division series against the Baltimore Orioles, the $275 million third baseman was removed from the starting lineup for Game 5 on Friday.

"I'm not happy and obviously disappointed," Rodriguez said before the Yankees won 3-1 and advanced to an AL championship series against Detroit. "Want to be in there in the worst way."

Eric Chavez started at third base and went 0 for 3, while Game 3 star Raul Ibanez was the designated hitter and singled in the game's first run. It was the first time A-Rod didn't start a postseason game for his team since 1995.

"It is difficult. He has meant a lot to the organization, the game of baseball over the years," manager Joe Girardi said. "And he has been a very productive hitter. But he struggled against right-handers in the series, and Chavy has been good against right-handers all year long."

The 37-year-old Rodriguez wass 2 for 16 (.125) with no RBIs in the series, going hitless in 12 at-bats against right-handed pitchers with nine strikeouts. He was 0 for 4 with three strikeouts in the opener against Jason Hammel, Baltimore's Game 5 starter.

Chavez hit .298 against righties during the regular season but is 0 for 4 against them in the playoffs.

Girardi contacted Rodriguez at about 1 p.m., before the 14-time All-Star arrived at Yankee Stadium, and informed him of the decision. Rodriguez took batting practice with the regular starters, not the reserves.

"It's never about Joe," Rodriguez said. "I always have to look in the mirror and do what I can do to do the best I can."

Since helping New York win the 2009 World Series, Rodriguez is 10 for 66 (.152) with no homers and six RBIs in postseason play. He hasn't homered in 84 at-bats since Sept. 14.

With the Yankees trailing 2-1 in the ninth inning of Game 3, Girardi sent up Ibanez to bat for A-Rod, and Ibanez hit a tying home run. Ibanez homered again in the 12th to give New York a 3-2 win.

Baltimore led 2-1 in the 13th inning in Game 4 when Chavez batted for Rodriguez and lined to third for the final out.

Is getting benched worse than getting pinch hit for?

"I'm not going to get into that," Rodriguez said. "I'm part of this team, and I'm ready to roll, and I'll be ready."

With the Yankees owing Rodriguez $114 million over the next five seasons, managing his decline could become a central issue for the team.

"I ain't worried about years ahead. Just let me worry about today," Girardi said. "The best relationships, the strongest relationships, are always relationships that go through some struggles. Relationships just aren't perfect. I mean, you put a husband and wife together where the relationship was just perfect without any struggles, and you're probably not living on this planet. So relationships go through that.

"So, I mean if things have to be, you know, built back up, we can do that. I have had to do that before. So I don't worry about that."

Fifth on the career list with 647 home runs ? 115 behind Barry Bonds' record ? Rodriguez has been slowed by five trips to the disabled list in five seasons: for a strained quadriceps (2008), hip surgery (2009), a strained calf (2010), knee surgery (2011) and a broken hand, sustained July 24 when hit by a pitch from Seattle's Felix Hernandez.

Before the start of spring training in 2009, he admitting using performance-enhancing drugs while he was with the Texas Rangers from 2001-03.

As for the rest of the Yankees' lineup, Derek Jeter was back at shortstop after being moved to DH for a game because of a sore left foot. Jeter led off, followed by left fielder Ichiro Suzuki, second baseman Robinson Cano, first baseman Mark Teixeira, Ibanez, right fielder Nick Swisher, center fielder Curtis Granderson, catcher Russell Martin and Chavez.

Yankees ace CC Sabathia was on the mound. He led the Yankees to a 7-2 win in the opener.

Girardi decided against benching Granderson, who is 1 for 16 (.063) with nine strikeouts in the series. He did not want to start Brett Gardner, who has been limited to three at-bats since mid-April because of an elbow injury that required surgery.

"If Grandy stays in his zone, he will be fine," Girardi said. "That's the big thing he has to concentrate on."

Selectmen take cautious funding approach on Ham Rec Complex ...

By Gail Geraghty

Staff Writer

Bridgton Selectmen delayed action on pursuing a major state grant that would help complete work at the Kendal C. and Anna Ham Recreation Complex Tuesday.

The reason?

The $377,000 grant comes with a required 50% match of $188,500, and even though volunteer labor and materials can be applied to the match, selectmen don?t want to commit town funds until they first meet with members of the sports complex?s fundraising arm, the Bridgton Recreation Advancement Group.

Board members Bernie King and Doug Taft were expected to meet Wednesday with BRAG officials on the matter. They want to know how much more money BRAG is planning to raise, beyond the $700,000 they?ve already raised on site preparation, design, field creation and fencing, and what they plan to spend it on.

The conservation department?s Land and Water Fund only pays for projects related directly to enjoyment of the outdoors. Anne Krieg, Bridgton?s Director of Planning, Economic and Community Development, said she and Recreation Director Tom Tash met last month with the Department of Conservation?s Mick Rogers, who told her the town?s best bet was to seek funding for the tennis courts, along with the playground and the walkway. A separate trail grant could be sought for the trail work, she said. The town also must take ownership of the complex before the work could begin.

BRAG President Bill Macdonald has said the nonprofit organization knows it will need to stay active well after the transfer of ownership to raise the estimated $500,000 still needed. Krieg said BRAG cannot apply for the DOC grant; only governmental entities are eligible.

Selectman Woody Woodward said that although volunteer labor and donated materials could be used to offset a good part of the cost of the gravel walkway and playground, only professional contractors can create two regulation-sized paved tennis courts, estimated to cost $225,000. As such, it seems clear that taxpayers would need to fund a good portion of the $188,500 match, he said.

Selectman Chairman Paul Hoyt agreed, saying it especially concerned him that the tennis court construction was part of what BRAG promised when the town agreed to use revenue from the Moose Pond Trust Fund for the project.

Just how ?Business-Friendly? is Bridgton?

Questions resurfaced over just how effective the town has been in marketing itself, as Krieg asked the board?s permission to apply to become an official ?Business Friendly Community? as defined by Maine Gov. Paul Lepage?s office. She said the designation could be used to earn points on grant applications and merely required an application with questions on zoning and other issues showing how easy it is to start a business in Bridgton. Hoyt said he?d like to see a copy of the application.

The discussion came up as the board reviewed a list Krieg prepared at their request of current and future projects and initiatives. Among needs listed under economic development were the ?Business Friendly? application; working with the high school on a work-ready program in collaboration with area businesses; and identifying growth areas in town (through completion of the Comprehensive Plan update) and what types of businesses should be recruited.

?There isn?t very much in here related to local businesses? that exist now, Woodward said. ?I?m concerned there?s not a lot here to promote local businesses. Right now the vast majority of lodging businesses are failing in Bridgton,? he said, while not-too-distant towns like Bethel, Naples and Raymond are actively promoting themselves as destination towns.

Krieg said her office has some funds budgeted for marketing, which could be applied. Ken Murphy, who will be taking over as President of the Greater Bridgton Lake Region Chamber of Commerce in January, took issue with Woodward?s comment that Bridgton might require more than the marketing efforts of a regional chamber serving 13 towns.

?Don?t belittle Bridgton at the expense of other towns,? Murphy said. He said the chamber was actively involved in the recent appearance by former baseball pro-turned cigar maker Luis Tiant at the William Perry Cigar Lounge. Murphy said the wife of the cigar lounge owner had agreed to join the chamber?s board of directors.

Woodward apologized if his comment sounded disrespectful of the chamber, because that was not what he meant. He said the website www.visitbridgton.com he had a part in creating has not been as effective as he had hoped, and suggested that Krieg?s office could become involved.

Marketing matters were again debated when the board discussed promotion of the town-owned Salmon Point Campground on Long Lake. Six new sites have been created, as recommended in the Community Development Committee?s Salmon Point Report.

The board agreed that questions of how much effort and money should be directed toward marketing will be better addressed once they rate their priorities for the upcoming year among a long list prepared by Town Manager Mitch Berkowitz of potential projects that have been discussed, on and off, for some time. Once each board member has rated the projects, Berkowitz will collate the results and deliver a summary at the board?s next regular meeting on Oct. 23.

In other action:

? Bernie King wanted to correct information in last week?s News stating that he was not in favor of the Bridgton Police Department?s practice of both posting mug shots of arrested individuals on its Facebook page and allowing users to make comments underneath. King said, ?I didn?t have a problem with the mug shots, but I do have a problem with the comments.? Selectmen will be discussing and taking action later this month on a draft policy for all forms of electronic communication used by persons appointed, elected and employed by the town.

? The board approved rules governing the operation of the thrift store of donated items at the transfer station. After four weekends of operation by a school group, the store appears to be a success, and other nonprofit groups will be allowed to raise money by staffing the store with volunteers. However, in order to be considered, the group either has to have official 501(c)(3) status as a nonprofit, or be sponsored by one.

? Agreed to new board rules for town committees outlining the minimum requirements for producing a town record of the meeting under the state?s Freedom of Access Law. Even though the letter of the law may be met solely by taping the meeting, the board?s new policy will require a written public record to be distributed to each selectman within four days following the meeting, even if only in draft form. The minutes must include a listing of members and others who attended, each motion made and seconded, and by whom, and the results of each motion. If no vote is taken, a brief account must be provided about the discussion.

PBT: Kobe's happy Yanks won, but bummed for A-Rod

That cry of ?hallelujah? you heard Wednesday night was every Yankee fan in America rejoicing when A-Rod got benched.

Raul Ibanez came to the plate in the ninth inning instead of Alex Rodriguez for the Yankees with the game on the line. Yankee fans were thrilled with the move even before Ibanez hit the home run to tie the game or the extra-inning dinger to win it and put New York up 2-1 over Baltimore.

Well, every Yankee fan but Kobe Bryant.

See, Kobe and A-Rod are tight, so he asked the media hoard after the Lakers preseason game Wednesday (which Kobe missed) about the game and? well, from Arash Markazi of ESPNLA.com.

I find this amusing, but then I find it amusing any time a Yankees fans is suffering.

I know what could cheer A-Rod up, maybe we put in a call to Cameron Diaz for him? no? Bad idea? Okay, then maybe Kobe can come up with something.

Deciding to Sell the Family Business - NYTimes.com

When it comes to American institutions, the family-owned business ranks right up there with baseball and apple pie. Yet whenever I am called to meet with business owners from more than one generation, I do so with mixed emotions.

Friendly faces always gather at the conference table, but beyond that point ? as the ancient mapmakers used to inscribe at the edge of the page ? there be dragons. In some instances, the family dynamics are evident immediately. In others, it can take months to decipher everyone?s true feelings about where the family business should be headed.

The two most common situations when a family is choosing between succession and a sale tend to be the following. Either one or more of the children want to take over the business, but the parents have other ideas, or mom and dad want the children to take over but the children have other plans for their lives. Even when everyone?s motives are clear, making the decision to sell can be tough.

For Lyle Clapper, there wasn?t much question that he would take over his parents? business. His mother had a knack for creating craft ideas ? she swears to this day that she invented the sock monkey ?? while his father had a passion for printing. In 1951, the couple started Pack-O-Fun, which they say is the country?s oldest craft magazine, out of their home in Park Ridge, Ill. Lyle, who was 9 at the time, used to sew magazine bindings in the basement.

After a stint working on the Univac in his 20s, Mr. Clapper came back to work in the family business, which he eventually bought from his parents and two siblings. In 1975, he introduced another magazine, Crafts ?n things. By 2005, he says, it had 50 employees, $12 million in annual sales and the largest circulation of any crafting magazine in the world. It also had Mr. Clapper and his wife, Marie, thinking about retirement. The option of selling was always on the table, but with six children, it stood to reason that one of them might want to take over the business.

?I was ambivalent about my career choice throughout my business life,? Mr. Clapper said. ?It gave me a leg up on the path to financial rewards, but the journey was unsatisfying. Marie and I took great pains to see that each of our kids was free to chart his or her own course.?

Mr. Clapper?s sentiment is consistent with those of many second-generation business owners, according to Thomas William Deans, a third-generation business owner and author of ?Every Family?s Business: 12 Common Sense Questions to Protect Your Wealth.?? ?I see the second generation falling into two distinct camps when it comes to succession planning with their own children,? Mr. Deans said. He draws a clear distinction between second-generation owners who have bought the business ? or risked some of their own capital to acquire it ? and those who have been given the business through an estate plan.

?The first camp would never want to put their kids through the same grinding issues that they endured with their parents ? the founders ? so the option of selling feels right on so many levels,? Mr. Deans said. ?Most of these Gen 2 owners come to understand that ?legacy? doesn?t feed a family. Cash has always worked better.? (You can read an extended interview with Mr. Deans here.)

The most likely successor among Lyle Clapper?s six children was Jeff. Having started his first business at age 26 ? a video game that he sold four years later to World Golf Tour ? he had clearly inherited what Mr. Deans calls the ?entrepreneurial gene.? Despite his parents? insistence that he chart his own path, Jeff found it hard to break with tradition and leave the business behind.

?Even though my parents had always been very clear that they wanted us to pursue our own interests, I felt like doing something different would be abandoning what my father had been working on his whole life,? said Jeff, whose latest two ventures help entrepreneurs sell their products to the mass market and train companies to work with Wal-Mart. ?I was definitely concerned that I?d hurt my parents? feelings if I didn?t get into the business ? especially my dad?s.?

Jeff describes his family members reaching a critical moment when they needed to decide whether to sell the business even though it had not reached a peak in valuation, or risk much of Lyle and Marie?s retirement. ?My dad and I both clearly remember a pivotal conversation when I finally had to tell him that I thought we should sell and move on,? Jeff explained. ?It wasn?t easy for either of us, but it was the right decision.?

As much as there is to love about family-owned businesses, they tend to be riddled with nonbusiness issues that complicate decision-making, especially when it comes time for mom and dad to retire. ?Most business owners completely underestimate their influence over their children,? Mr. Deans explained. ?It is the rare child ? even adult child ? who says no to their parent?s invitation to join the family business.?

For Lyle Clapper, the decision to sell was one he has never regretted. While the business was an integral part of his life for 55 years, he concedes that it eventually became a burden. ?We were relieved and elated to leave it in someone else?s hands,? he said. ?On the rare occasions that we look back, we wouldn?t change a thing.?

Will your generation be the one that sells the family business?

What to Know About Affiliate Marketing Programs | Content for Reprint

Author: Mike Christie | Total views: 99 Comments: 0
Word Count: 737 Date:

Affiliate marketing programs have allowed many people to earn income online in the comfort and security of their own home. For many, this is like a dream come true - Making money without having to leave home. No big upfront investment of money or equipment. No need to inventory or ship products. As far as new business opportunities go for people who want to earn income online, it really doesn't get any better than affiliate marketing .

The great thing about affiliate marketing is that you can do it both part time and full time, and the types of products and services being offered range from beauty products to electronic devices. So how do you know what is best for you and your lifestyle? Here are some general rules on affiliate marketing programs that you need to know. They will show you how to choose the right one and how to make the venture successful.

Deciding on the Right Affiliate Marketing Program

The first rule is to work with a legitimate, well known company in the affiliate marketing industry. It can be very difficult to find the right one because when you try to research this on the internet, you can get bombarded with all kinds of outrageous promises. Some companies that offer affiliate marketing services are not bona fide and you should be on alert. You need to do some your homework and make sure the company will follow through on all of the commitments they make in their marketing materials. Don't jump at the first company to make an offer in helping you to get started. Take your time, be selective, and go with the firm that offers the best package, support, and reputation for honesty.

Choosing a product or products is also very important. It is important that you believe and use the product or service that you are selling. You cannot very easily promote a product without truly understanding it from the user's perspective. Get behind the wheel and drive it first if you plan on selling it.

You also need to choose a product that has the potential to sell well. You can personally be passionate about a product and use it yourself, but make sure that it has broad appeal and can be sold to many people rather than a few. Selling to a very narrow market in terms of numbers can be a challenging in that you may not see enough sales to cover your marketing costs. It costs the same amount of money to place an ad for a product with broad appeal as it does a narrow one, so make sure that your product can appeal to a large number of consumers.

Setting up an Affiliate Marketing Site

Most affiliate marketing programs require that one set up a website, although there are many products and services that can be sold offline as well. Fortunately, it is not hard to set up a blog or website for free or at low cost. Web hosts such as Wordpress, Blogger, and Weebly enable one to set up a good looking site free of charge. Furthermore, these sites are easy to work with, so even a person without technical know-how can set up an appealing, well designed site.

However, one will then need to be willing to learn the basics of website optimization in order to promote the site online. This is where you are going to want to spend some money and hire an expert to help. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is critical to the success of your online business, and is a process that requires time and expertise to do effectively. There are some very talented folks in the business that can do this for you for not a lot of money, which allows you to work on the things you know and are good at.

Affiliate marketing can be a good way to earn income online. There are many businesses that are willing to pay affiliates a generous commission for their services. However, one should choose a product and company only after doing research and then be willing to work hard promoting the merchandise in question. The good news is that with hard work, perseverance and wise planning, a person can successfully earn a living while working from home.

Friday I had a fun time at looking at art shows at local businesses. But Monday was a bummer when I ended up in the emergency room to get treatment for a bladder infection.

My best consumer experience: Wine tasting at Arts Walk

IMG_3927

After lunch with friends on a nice sunny day, shopping at the Farmers? Market, and hanging up flyers for upcoming events, I spent several hours looking at art hung in local businesses for our community?s Arts Walk.

I ended up at the Olympia Wine & Tasting Bar. I had a ?flight? of four tastes of wine. Then I bought a bottle of white wine, Salida Albarino, crafted by Doug McCrea of McCrea Cellers.

It was a pleasant end to a nice day.

My worst consumer experience: Being rejected by three doctor?s offices with evening hours

Monday evening about 5:30 p.m., I felt like I was coming down with a bladder infection.

Although my doctor?s office has evening hours, they were unable to take me because they didn?t have any appointments left. The receptionist gave me the address of a minor emergency clinic.

After printing out a map, I arrived at 7 p.m., an hour before closing, I thought. However, the receptionist rejected me. She said they were really busy and didn?t have any examining rooms left. She said I could go to the emergency room. I asked about the other minor emergency clinic. The receptionist said it was over by Skipper?s.

Although I didn?t have a map, I set out. Since it?s in a mall, I spent 10 minutes hunting around for it.

Arriving at 7:30 p.m., I was hopeful about getting seen. However, I was rejected again. The clinic didn?t take my primary insurance.

Before heading to the emergency room, I stopped at Skipper?s to get something to eat. I hadn?t had dinner, and they don?t let you eat anything in the ER.

The good news is that it only took two hours. I?ve been to the ER several times before, and it?s taken from three to four hours.

It?s irritating that my doctor?s office and the minor emergency clinics don?t have policies about helping someone in pain. It?s ironic that I ended up in the ER, a place that consumers are supposed to stay away from to keep health care costs down.

Big Bird nearly steals show on 'SNL'

By Susan Hornik, TODAY contributor

After Mitt Romney's controversial comments about PBS at last week's presidential debate, you almost had to expect an appearance?by Big Bird on "Saturday Night Live." The uber-popular "Sesame Street" character almost stole the perch, er show, from the equally iconic James Bond -- the suave 007 secret agent star, Daniel Craig, who showed his more humorous side hosting last night.

At the "Weekend Update" anchor desk, host Seth Myers wondered why Big Bird was immediately yawning.

"Are you bored?" he asked.?

"No, it's just that it's seven hours past my bedtime!" ?As it turns out the "Sesame Street" star is familiar with Twitter,?telling Meyers how he had learned?about being mentioned on Wednesday's debate. "Oh, I got a million tweets."

?So you?re on Twitter?? Myers asked.

?No, I?m a bird! Tweeting is how we talk,? Big Bird quipped.?

The debate controversy brought the much-loved bird added attention.??I feel like I?m famous now,? Big Bird said. ?I was walking down the street the other day and I felt like everybody recognized me. It?s so weird to think that just a few days ago, I could just blend in like every other perfectly normal 8-foot-tall talking bird!?

When asked if he had a political statement to make about the debate, Big Bird said, "No, I didn't want to ruffle any feathers." But he did have a joke.?"Do you know who loves debates? De-fishes. Because fish eat bait!"

As part of his "Presidential Debate 2012 Winners/Losers," the rest of Meyers' "Weekend Update" was filled with political zingers toward ?moderator Jim Lehrer, criticizing him for?repeatedly allowing Romney and Obama to go over their allotted time on questions.??Jim, if that?s how long you think two minutes is, your wife is a very lucky woman.?

Meyers acknowledged Fox News as a "winner" and said the network must have said after the debate, ?I think we can report this exactly the way it happened.?

"SNL" ?opened with a debate sketch that tried to explain why Obama (Jay Pharoah) was distracted during the first debate -- he was thinking about an anniversary present for his wife Michelle, and had difficulty with Denver's high altitude.?

The best part of ?Daniel Craig hosting "Saturday Night Live"? Being able to see a trailer for "Skyfall," the latest James Bond thriller, opening next month!

What did you think about Daniel Craig as the host, or Big Bird visiting "Weekend Update"? Which was your favorite skit? Tell us on our Facebook page!

Extradited terrorism suspects appear in U.S. courts

NEW YORK (AP) ? A partially blind Egyptian-born preacher and four other terrorism suspects appeared in federal courts Saturday, hours after they lost yearslong extradition fights in Britain and were transported to the U.S. under tight security to face trial.

The preacher, Abu Hamza al-Masri, entered no plea to charges of conspiring with Seattle men to set up a terrorist training camp in Oregon and of helping abduct 16 hostages, two of them American tourists, in Yemen in 1998.

Al-Masri has hooks in place of hands, but he came into court without them and both arms exposed through his short-sleeved blue prison shirt. His court-appointed lawyer, Sabrina Shroff, asked that his prosthetics be immediately returned "so he can use his arms."

The four other extradited men pleaded not guilty. Khaled al-Fawwaz and Adel Abdul Bary appeared alongside al-Masri in New York and Syed Talha Ahsan and Babar Ahmad were arraigned in New Haven, Conn., to charges that they provided terrorists in Afghanistan and Chechnya with cash, recruits and equipment.

Lawyers for both al-Fawwaz and Bary noted the ailments of their clients and said they were concerned that they get their medication. The lawyers did not seek bail for their clients though Bary's attorney reserved the right to do so in the future.

Ahsan, 33, and Ahmad, 38, were kept detained while they await trial in Connecticut, where an Internet service provider was allegedly used to host a website. Their lawyers declined to comment.

Ahmad made efforts to secure GPS devices, Kevlar helmets, night vision goggles and camouflage uniforms, prosecutors said.

Al-Masri, a one-time nightclub bouncer, will be housed in Manhattan along with Khaled al-Fawwaz, 50, a citizen of Saudi Arabia, and Adel Abdul Bary, 52, an Egyptian citizen, who will face trial on charges that they participated in the bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa in 1998. The attacks killed 224 people, including 12 Americans. They were indicted in a case that also charged Osama bin Laden.

U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara called the extraditions "a watershed moment in our nation's efforts to eradicate terrorism."

He added: "As is charged, these are men who were at the nerve centers of Al Qaeda's acts of terror, and they caused blood to be shed, lives to be lost, and families to be shattered."

In the 1990s, al-Masri turned London's Finsbury Park Mosque into a training ground for extremist Islamists, attracting men including Sept. 11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui and "shoe bomber" Richard Reid.

Al-Masri is not the first ailing Egyptian-born preacher to be brought to Manhattan for trial. A blind sheik, Omar Abdel-Rahman, is serving a life sentence after he was convicted in 1995 in a plot to assassinate then-Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and in another to blow up New York landmarks, including the United Nations and two tunnels and a bridge linking New Jersey to Manhattan. Abdel-Rahman has numerous health issues, including heart trouble.

In England, lawyers for the 54-year-old al-Masri, who has one eye and hooks in place of hands he claims to have lost fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan, said he suffers from depression, chronic sleep deprivation, diabetes and other ailments.

The overnight trip to the United States came after a multi-year extradition fight that ended Friday, when Britain's High Court ruled that the men had no more grounds for appeal and could be sent to the U.S. immediately. The men have been battling extradition for between eight and 14 years.

"I'm absolutely delighted that Abu Hamza is now out of this country," British Prime Minister David Cameron said. "Like the rest of the public I'm sick to the back teeth of people who come here, threaten our country, who stay at vast expense to the taxpayer and we can't get rid of them."

"I'm delighted on this occasion we've managed to send this person off to a country where he will face justice," he added.

Al-Masri has been in a British jail since 2004 on separate charges of inciting racial hatred and encouraging followers to kill non-Muslims.

While al-Masri has been portrayed in the British media as one of the most dangerous men in the country, the case against Ahmad in Connecticut has raised concerns among legal experts and human rights advocates.

Some lawyers and lawmakers have expressed concerns because Britain agreed to extradite him even though his alleged crimes were committed in Britain and British courts declined to prosecute him for lack of evidence. Ahmad and Ahsan are accused of running websites to support Afghanistan's ousted Taliban regime, Chechen rebels and associated terrorist groups.

In prison since 2004, Ahmad, a London computer expert, has been held without charge for the longest period of any British citizen detained since the Sept. 11 attacks.

In a statement read on his behalf outside court in London Friday, Ahmad said his case had exposed flaws in U.S.-U.K. extradition arrangements. "I leave with my head held high, having won the moral victory," he said.

His father, Ashfaq Ahmad, said he would continue to fight for his son.

"It's not just one Babar Ahmad. Tomorrow there will be another Babar Ahmad and another one," he said.

Internet Marketing Tips: Keywords Power Your PPC Advertisements

They are the "engine" that triggers your ads to appear based on user searches; therefore it's crucial that you choose your keywords carefully. If Google does not view your ads as being relevant, your ads will not show up in searches and will not be seen by Google?s users. Your keywords, ad groups and landing pages should all make use of relevant keywords and build upon one another, helping to power your PPC advertisements.

PPC Traffic Formula

It?s vital that you include only RELEVANT, TARGETED keywords into your PPC campaigns. One of the biggest mistakes that new PPC marketers make is in 'mass assigning' keywords to their PPC campaigns. They believe that if they simply throw in a ton of keywords, they'll gain a higher level of exposure. In truth, using irrelevant keywords will not help your campaigns at all, and in fact, this will actually work against you!

So, the more focused your Google AdWords campaign is, the better. Concentrate on relevant, high converting keywords and your campaign will be more successful in terms of how often your ad appears, number of clicks, and the cost-effectiveness of your ads.

Tomorrow we'll cover creating your first campaign.
